ESA’s policy director on FERC’s ‘strategic review’ of energy storage’s role

Energy Storage NewsOperators of transmission infrastructure and wholesale markets in the US have supplied their views on energy storage to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), with industry and other stakeholders expected to follow.

FERC launched a drive last month to seek input from Regional Transmission Organisations (RTOs) and Independent System Operators (ISOs) on the role energy storage could play in wholesale markets. This includes market design and the potential role of behind-the-meter,customer-sited solar-plus-storage where it could play into wholesale markets as well as providing distributed benefits such as back-up or peak shifting.

Mercom: Storage systems, flow batteries raised quarter of a billion dollars VC funding in a year

Energy Storage NewsTexas-headquarted Mercom Capital Group recently released its Q1 2016 funding and M&A report for energy storage, smart grid and energy efficiency sectors. Mercom’s CEO and co-founder Raj Prabhu discussed the energy storage trends tracked in this quarter with Energy-Storage.News, especially in light of the drop in venture capital funding this quarter.

California’s Sunverge Energy secured most of the venture capital (VC) funding for its storage systems, taking about US$36 million out of the US$54 million that was raised over 10 deals. Sunverge is continuing its winning streak; having recently partnered with AGL, Australia’s biggest utility, which invested US$20 million in the company as part of its climate change initiative funding.

PVTechThere should be no surprises regarding the top five ranked PV module manufacturers in 2015, as they form the backbone of the key six-member ‘Silicon Module Super League’ (SMSL), which PV Tech highlighted in late November 2015.

The Top 10 PV module manufacturers list for 2015 is based on actual module shipments through the first nine months of last year and guidance figures as well as detailed analysis of over 45 leading manufacturers’ expected shipments for the full year.  

One of the challenges in assessing module shipments of the top 10 producers last year was the rapidly deteriorating business position of SMSL member, Yingli Green.

Enel lands 64MW home win

renewsEnel Green Power has become the 100% owner of Maicor Wind, following the acquisition of the remaining 40% of the company from PLT energia.

The deal means Enel owns, in part through the Maicor Wind subsidiary Enerlive, two wind farms in Calabria with a total capacity of 64MW.

The two plants, which have been in operation since 2011, are the 56MW Cortale wind farm in Maida and the 8MW San Floro facility in Catanzaro.

GE to ship 220 MW of inverters to solar project in Dubai

SeeNews-RenewablesMay 3 (SeeNews) – US conglomerate General Electric (NYSE:GE) will supply 220 MW of its LV5 Series solar inverters for the second stage of the up to 5-GW Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum project in Dubai.

GE expects to start deliveries of the products this summer. The inverters are part of a frame agreement between the US company and Spanish engineering, procurement and construction firm TSK, which won the right to build the solar park alongside Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power International.

California Winery Uses Solar Power And Energy Storage

cleantechnicaThe Stone Edge Farm and winery in Sonoma, California has a 32 kW solar array, 14 of Aquion’s 25 kWh M-Line battery modules, and an Ideal Power 30 kW multi-port power conversion system. The solar PV array provides electricity to the primary residence, workshops, and offices. The renewable electricity system is generating so much power that some can be sold back to the local utility.

It is also part of an onsite microgrid which was designed for self-consumption, load shifting, and peak shaving. “The Stone Edge Farm project is an excellent example of how long-duration advanced batteries plus solar PV can enable on-site renewable energy generation and maximize solar self-consumption,” explained Scott Pearson, CEO of Aquion Energy.
