Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and energy storage firm is poised for another major initiative after the founder announced that he is working on a “Tesla Masterplan, Part 2.”

Musk took to twitter to relay the news and said he is hoping to publish the new plans later this week.

On hearing the news, Jigar Shah, the well-known clean energy entrepreneur and co-founder of SunEdison, now leading specialist finance company Generate Capital, posted that he had already predicted a “Tesla 2.0”. He also pointed to a blog of his in which he suggested that Tesla’s planned takeover of major residential solar installer SolarCity could help Musk create a company that is more valuable than Apple in the future. This would be achieved through the company’s new ability to integrate Electric Vehicles (EV), storage, efficiency, demand response, and solar capabilities.

According to IHS Technology, energy storage pipeline advances are led by the United States, China and South Korea. The “IHS Energy Storage Company and Project Database – Q2, 2016” tracks a total of 2 gigawatts (GW) of grid-connected energy storage projects – a 20 percent increase, since the end of 2015.

Lithium ion’s (Li-ion’s) share of the energy storage market has grown steadily from 20 percent deployed in 2010 to 90 percent forecast for 2016.

Susan Kennedy, CEO of Advanced Microgrid Solutions, has observed, “The entire electrical distribution system is designed around a single premise: You cannot store energy.”

The premise of her company: “Equipping a building with the technology to store and manage its own electricity turns that building into a standalone storage unit,” and if you “combine a dozen buildings into a fleet, you have the utility equivalent of a peaker plant.” She told GTM recently, “We’re offering utilities a customized solution using energy storage behind the customer’s meter, harnessing that load to provide specifically what the utility needs in a particular region. Owing to massive cost reductions, Li-ion technology is now leading lead-acid batteries in the power storage category; it is even challenging sodium sulphur and flow for long-duration storage. IHS estimates that 90 percent of the utility-side of meter energy storage projects tracked are based on Li-ion battery technology. Underpinning the rapid cost reduction is the build-up of the supply chain for batteries in the auto and power sectors. Competition between China’s BYD, GCL, South Korea’s Samsung SDI, LG Chem and Japan’s Panasonic is intensifying. In the residential space GCL has launched a battery system at $450/kWh (excluding inverter) in Australia, nearly matching Tesla’s announced price of $3,000 for a 7kWh system.

Secretary of state for energy Amber Rudd sent a clear message last week that the UK remains committed to carbon reductions. The country’s fifth carbon budget, put before parliament on 30 June, sets a legally binding target of 57 percent reductions by 2032, compared to a 1990 benchmark.
