India invests in Canada storage

on November 10, 2017

Indian state-owned company Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has invested $12m in the 28MW Basin 1 and 2 battery storage project in the Canadian province of Ontario.

EESL has partnered with UK advisor EnergyPro to form EESL EnergyPro Assets Limited (EPAL) for the project. The JV has invested $12m in the scheme.

Basin 1 and 2 is being built and owned by Swiss lithium-ion battery developer Leclanché and development partner Deltro Energy.

The 28MW/14 MWh project will provide services to the Independent Energy Systems Operator that oversees and manages the power grid of the province of Ontario, and is interconnected to Toronto Hydro, the largest municipal electricity distribution company in Canada.

“We are excited to be working with our joint venture partner EESL and Leclanché on this significant utility scale energy storage project,” said EnergyPro managing partner Steven Fawkes.

“We see it as a first step to deploying energy storage solutions at a range of scales, something that will be essential to the energy transition in all economies.”

EPAL chairman Saurabh Kumar added: “It has been our constant endeavour to make future-ready technology solutions accessible. We are confident that this partnership will help bring a new era of clean energy solutions for the world.”

Finns make US storage move

on May 18, 2017

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement to acquire US energy storage company Greensmith Energy Management Systems.

The deal, which is still subject to US regulatory approvals, will allow Wärtsilä to expand its footprint in the energy storage market and position as a global energy systems integrator.

Greensmith will continue operate as an individual business under Wärtsilä Energy Solutions.

The transaction is expected to close no later than July.

Greensmith chief executive John Jung said: “The combination of Greensmith’s position and capability in energy storage technology with Wärtsilä’s global leadership in integrated energy solutions, with over 63GW of installed power plant capacity across 176 countries – will bring both market and technology synergies to both organizations.”

Greensmith’s projects include a partnership with Eon on two energy storage plants with a total volume of almost 20MW in Texas.

Storage ‘to hit 93GW by 2025’

on March 6, 2017

The market for energy storage and ancillary services is expected to total 93.8GW by 2025, according to a new report by Navigant Research.

The report – ‘Energy Storage for the Grid and Ancillary Services’ – found an increasing interest from utilities and grid operators in energy storage.

However, many developers still see a “significant need for education throughout the industry and believe these systems should have their own rules and be treated as a unique technology in regulatory structures”, Navigant said.

Differences in energy market structures and grid needs around the world will result in energy storage markets with unique needs, the report said.

“This dynamic highlights how important it is to have flexible offerings in both technologies and business models to succeed,” it added.

Storage offers outage ‘solution’

on December 7, 2016

renewsBattery storage coupled with low-carbon electricity generation could have helped to avoid the power outages experienced in South Australia earlier this year, according to a study by RES and Lloyd’s Register.

RES Australia technical head Jeremy Moon said the power outages, which were caused by severe storms will mean a detailed review of the Australian state’s power system security policy.

He said: “Operators are faced with a huge challenge to protect energy generation supply and demand in extreme weather conditions.

“We understand this requires investment long term and the adoption of new technology and solutions that enable sustainable energy provision now and in the future.”

The two companies said new technology should be planned for now by both government and operators.

Lloyd’s Register energy services manager for the Australian power engineering division Andrew Jones said: “New technology solutions in energy storage can be leveraged to help operators use more cost-effective and locally produced energy.

“This study seeks to open discussions on … how large-scale grid connected battery storage available right now can play a critical role in improving power system events such as those experienced in South Australia.”
